UPDATES

..........................................................JANUARY 2014..............................................................

1.23.13 I am so happy to say that I have started on my next short film, "Stuffed". I don't want to say too much about the story, but the short film is about stuffed animals that come to life. I'll be combining puppetry work and green screen to achieve this. I've already started editing the footage and I am loving how it's coming out. Who knows, maybe these test scenes/shots will become a micro short! Check out some of the screen caps below:

1.9.14 I received a very nice email this morning, letting me know that Electro-Cute! had a new review. The short was reviewed by the very talented Gruesome Hertzogg, and wow, what a review! I seriously can not thank him enough for his kind words. What's really cool about this review, too, is that it's an audio review. Click here to listen to the full review (it's about 3 minutes long), you can check out some of the highlights below:

"I don’t get very many short films that are entertaining, off the wall, way out there, and awesome. You have animation, you have comedy, you have fantasy and you have craziness. This short film, again, is one of a kind...... I’m telling you something, Taryn, you have a knack of making films that put you in places where you find yourself, and don’t want to be. Brillant film. I am, totally, wow....... I’m telling you something. I’ve seen a lot of short films, but when you watch this film, it just makes you feel cartoonish, enough said.....Well shot, well acted, a very interesting cool story line.....8.5 out of 10"

................................................................DECEMBER.............................................................

12.24.13 I am thrilled to say that Electro-Cute! was accepted into another festival! This will probably be the shorts final festival, so it's fun that it's a local. The short film will screen at the FANtastic Horror Film Festival, that takes place in San Diego, CA in October 2014. Check back for more updates soon!

12.11.13 Last weekend I had the pleasure of acting in a holiday advent for A Christmas Barrel. I had a great time on set and it was a lot of fun having the opportunity to play the "crazy, angry girlfriend". I never get cast in roles like that, so it was fun yelling at a door for the day.

..................................................................NOVEMBER............................................................

11.30.13 Wow, I've been really lazy about updating my website. I apoligize to my one reader, who is probably my Mom. Since it's been a while, I will make my first and last post in November a good one! My short film, "Electro-Cute!", was reviewed by Mike Thomas over at Matchflick, and what a review it was! You can read the full review here, but if you're like, "Taryn, I don't have time", you can read the highlights below:

"ELECTRO-CUTE!, a zany short from Chain Smoking Monkey Productions, is a highly imaginative, high concept skit"

"The short plays out like one of the later series of "The Twilight Zone," where the twist is delivered with a lighter touch than the older episodes."

"This reviewer did what he has never done - watched the commentary AND the "Making of" accompanying features. In most cases, these features are an exercise in self-indulgent tedium, but in this rare instance, the commentary gave some interesting insight on some of the zaniness of the short, and the "Making of" feature was interactive! There is actually drinking game during the feature!"

"ELECTRO-CUTE! is an experience into a mind unfettered by normal conventions. It is a tale of experimentation, scientifically-induced hallucinations, and tasers"

"This reviewer is calling this a very strong "BUY," because, like the AIRPLANE films or "Police Squad" shows, this film demands multiple viewing, with a strong suggestion to watch not only the feature itself, but also the accompanying features."

.................................................................SEPTEMBER............................................................

9.16.13 I'm very happy to say that Electro-Cute! is going to be included in the Short 'N Spirits Showcase. The showcase takes place in Burbank, CA on Oct 16th. I don't really know what to expect, but I'm looking forward to it! More info coming soon

9.15.13 Naperville Independent Film Festival does something that I wish more festivals would start doing. They have someone review/give a quick synopsis of each movie that is screening that day, and then give their picks of what screenings you should check out. Luckily, the reviewer (Karen Glazik), liked Electro-Cute! and the short was even selected for the "Sunday Picks". So, if you're in Illinois, make sure to stop by NIFF and check out Electro-Cute!, I promise you'll love it! (WARNING, I do not promise that you will love my movie)

You can watch the entire video below, or, click here to go right to the 4:30 mark, and just hear about Electro-Cute!

9.3.13 I am so excited to share this amazing article! As he does every year, Baron Craze covered the Terror Film Festival, which is a terrific horror/sci fi/thriller film festival that takes place in Philadelphia. TFF is always a ton of fun, and Baron's coverage of the festival is always spot on. My short film, Electro-Cute!, was lucky enough to be included in the mix! Click here to read the full article by Baron Craze, below are some quotes that areTaryn centric, because, I mean, you are reading my website:

"Taryn Hough, a multi-talented director and writer, who displayed her film ELECTRO-CUTE, during the Splatter Shorts......Taryn co-stars with Jaclyn Carmichael, who is no stranger to short film productions at this festival, such as Unit 30 (another award-winning film from Taryn)........ ELECTRO-CUTE takes the audience on a crazy yet fun film..... This film mixes live action, animated comedy and along with many tidbits of quirky dialogue, dashing it all with some sci-fi insanity for special effect. The trip that Pandora takes makes one appreciate the time to escape to enjoy this short film, never taking itself too seriously, and watching her character become a tad nutty as she interacts with inanimate objects including a taser. Taryn delivers another sounded well-crafted creative short film; everyone looks to more from this director, writer and actress."

.....................................................................AUGUST.................................................................

8.16.13 I have the screening info for Electro-Cute! at the Naperville Film Festival. The short film is screening on Sunday Sept. 15th at 10:50pm, during the Short Live Action Group #6. The festival takes place at Classic Cinemas Ogden 6. More info coming soon!

..........................................................................JUNE....................................................................

6.1.13 WOW! I got back from Miscon a few days ago and the festival has easily become one of my favorites to attend. I met so many wonderful people, saw a ton of great films, and it's held in Missoula, MT, which is a beautiful city to visit. What more could you ask for!? Electro-Cute! screened 3 times at the festival, 2 were scheduled, 1 was by request by an audience member after the awards program, -how amazing is that!? While there, I was on a Q&A panel about indie film making, and that was a ton of fun, I shared the panel with Timothy Quill and Ian Carruthers. Electro-Cute! then screened during the Fantasy Block that night and was greeted with roars of laughter and 2 rounds of applause! The following day the short film had it's second screening and a Q&A with me about the making of, that had a great turn out and it was a blast answering everyones questions and discussing the short film. Now this takes me to the awards program....I was very pleasantly surprised to find out that Electro-Cute! won 3 awards at the festival!! The short was lucky enough to win: Best Fantasy Short Film, Audience Favorite and Best Overall Short Film. I was shocked and humbled and a million other emotions, but most of all, I was grateful. Electro-Cute! screened along side so many other amazing short films, it's an honor to win the awards that it did. Check out this cool comic LarsenGeekery made about Miscon below:

Make sure to check out more pics from the festival here

This festival/con looks like a ton of fun and I'm really looking forward to it!

5.27.12 A short film I wrote, directed and acted in called "Electro-Cute!" received it's first review. I can not thank Richard Propes over at The Independent Critic enough for writing such kind words. Make sure to check out the whole review, but here is a highlight:

"Electro-Cute benefits greatly from the presence of Hough in the lead role, whose normalcy and befuddlement are a delight to watch unfold as the world around her becomes increasingly chaotic and weird. Hough projects a sort of "girl next door" screen presence, no small task when the attention she starts getting becomes increasingly strange."

5.14.12 Check out the trailer for my latest short film, "Electro-Cute!"

5.1.12 Good news everyone! My short film Unit 30 was accepted to another film festival. Awwww yea! U30 will screen May 19 at the Horror Hotel film festival in Ohio. We're playing at 8:30pm, make sure to get your tickets ASAP!

2.16-26.12- BRB in New York. Again

2.1.12. I had a fun day of shooting green screen for Electro-Cute! I was like BAM, and it was like WHOA. Here are the results

.............................................................JANUARY.........................................................

1.24.12 As promised, feast your eyes on a rough cut of the first 2 and a half minutes of Electro-Cute! The very talented Bill Rogers provided the voice of the announcer and I lost hours of my life making the animation. Enjoy!

1.9.12 BRB in New York. When I get back I'll post the first 2 minutes of my latest short film, try to contain yourself until then

1.1.12 Ah yea, it's 2012! You know what that means........

............................................................DECEMBER........................................................

12.31.11 Happy New Years Eve! Please don't do anything stupid, like drink and drive, otherwise I'll have to kill you! :-)

12.25.11 Merry Christmas and stuff!

12.9.11 I've been working on the opening animation for my latest short film for the past week. I'm really happy with how it's turning out and am thrilled that my computer hasn't died on me in the process! Why would my computer be a little baby bitch, you ask? That's because animating is crazy labour/memory intensive. The picture to the left is the finished product, which appears to be one image. The picture on the right shows that the image is actually comprised of 10 images. And yes, that is a table floating in the background.

.....hmmm, seems simple enough.....................................What kind of witchcraft is this!?.....

.............................................................NOVEMBER........................................................

This is a hat I made for a cow..........Nothing to see here. Just burning some kids shoes

I was asked to "ruin" this shirt......Finished product on Ben Blair

4.19.11 Remember that freelance editing work I mentioned earlier? Well I now have the clips to prove it! I feel weird posting videos that are not of me on my site, so if you would like to see the interviews, with Denise Gossett (founder of ShriekFest Film festival) or Mark Posiella (director of Dynamite Swine), click on the links

4.1.11 Have no fear, I was not murdered, my month absence was due to some freelance editing work, an allergy infection and the passing of my wonderful dog Theodore. I've been keeping busy, I just didn't feel up to posting anything on here.

................................................................FEBRUARY.............................................................

2.19.11 What was that? You wanted an update about the Media Film Festival? Sounds good to me! Below is the trailer for the film festival. A quick montage of "The Shift" is featured in the trailer, starting around the 49 sec mark (sfx shot) and ends 7-8 secs later:

Even during my green phase, I've never done so much green screen before in my life! (why do I look high and tired?)

The set that was built for the shoot was amazing.

1.7.11 Check out the awesome review my short film Unit 30 received from The Indepdent Critic! Make sure you click on the link and read the full review, but here are some of the highlights:

"...with its entertaining blend of humorous camp, touches of horror and enough originality to keep you wishing that you had a heck of a lot longer than the film's 21-minute run time."

"Unit 30 is a delightful blend of campy horror, character-driven hijinks and tongue-in-cheek thrills that will keep you laughing courtesy of rock solid performances from Hough and McCurdy along with supporting players Eric Pirooz..... and Jaclyn Carmichael"

"Unit 30 benefits from a spirited original score by Phillip McCollum that nicely companions Hough's dialogue."

"The entire cast seems to be having a good time here, an energy that plays nicely as our scenario goes from seemingly normal to anything but normal."

"Despite being a low-budget indie, tech credits are solid throughout the film."

1.1.11 Happy New Year!

The festival takes place August 6-8th in Ohio, I'm not sure when U30 is screening, stay tuned for more details.

6.11.10 I've returned from filming back East. Whoever said, "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere" was obviously not talking about New York, but was referring to shooting a movie on the East coast. The humidity alone will put hair on your chest! I can't say too much about the movie....But what I can say, is that it is a sci-fi drama with a lot of sfx and I had an amazing time during the shoot. I met and worked with so many wonderful people and really couldn't have asked for a better group to spend 5 days with shooting a movie.

6.9.10 New feature added! I've included a page called "Fun Stuff" to show some of my artwork and animations. Between my busy schedule of counting calories and sleeping, I'll try to remember to update FS often.

6.1.10 The new website is finally up and running! To think, it only took me 4 years to make a mediocre html website. Who needs college!
